There are several abnormalities of white blood cells, of which some but not all will be described in the following slides. Hypersegmentation of granulocytes is present in the blood of patients with megaloblastic anemia, as is shown here. Five lobes are the upper limit of the normal number seen. Hypersegmentation may also be seen in chronic disease of the kidney and liver, myelofibrosis, and, rarely, in iron deficiency.
