Slide 16
The reticulocytes are increased in this blood. There are six reticulocytes in a total of 26 cells. If the same proportion held until 1,000 red cells were counted, there would be approximately 23%. The percentage in normal blood varies from 0.3-2.5%. If you consider that reticulocytes are the best indication for effective erythropoiesis, then logically you would find them increased (1 ) in hemolytic anemias, (2) in response to therapy (eg, B12 in pernicious anemia and iron in iron deficiency), and (3) in response to blood loss.
