In this slide we see a small body in the cell in the center breaking away from the nucleus of a normoblast. The bodies may break off during mitosis. They represent abnormal chromosomes that have separated from the mitotic spindle. They may remain in the red cell as a Howell-Jolly body after the nucleus is extruded.
