The cell indicated by the arrow contains a tetragonal crystal within the intact membrane. Rare crystals may be seen in blood smears of patients with hemoglobin C diseases. The patient from whom the blood was obtained had Hb C thalassemia, verified by hemoglobin electrophoresis of the patient and her parents.
