Reticulocytes also can be stained with brilliant cresyl blue, which is the method that was used in making this slide. This is a so-called "wet retic" preparation, as the cells are in the liquid media with which they were stained. The retics must be counted within eight hours when this method is used. Other stains that precipitate the ribosomes are old methylene blue, Nile blue sulfate, and fluorescent dyes, but these are not as convenient to use as are the two stains described previously.
