This slide demonstrates the activity of the naphthol AS-D acetate esterase in monocytes after inhibition with NaF. When the mixture for detecting esterase activity is prepared, one half is used without NaF, and NaF is added to the other half. The procedure is carried out simultaneously in two jars. The esterase is largely inhibited by fluoride in monocytes, but NaF has little effect on the granules in granulocytes. (See Hayhoe and Quaglino, pp 146-171.)
