Slide 25
The erythrocytes seen in this picture are oval in shape. They are called ovalocytes or elliptocytes. The slide was prepared from the blood of a patient with hereditary elliptocytosis, usually a benign disease but sometimes associated with a mild hemolytic anemia. Ovalocytes are seen in lesser numbers in many anemias and leukemias.
