Spherocytes also may be present in the blood of newborn infants. If many are present they are a good indication of a major blood group incompatibility. The blood on the left contains many spherocytes. It was obtained from an infant with ABO incompatibility. Compare it to the smear on the right, which was made from the blood of a newborn with Rh incompatibility.
